SERUI, YAPEN

In 2021, a dedicated team of educators was sent to Yapen Island in response to a local government request to establish Christian education. Since then, they have worked to develop strategies, serve children, and equip local teachers to improve education in the area.

Yapen Island, off the northern coast of Papua, is known for its beautiful landscapes and fishing industry. Serui, the main town where MSI teachers serve, is home to about 108,000 people, most of whom rely on farming and fishing. Despite its natural resources, nearly 30% of the population lives in poverty. Educational attainment is low, with only 47% of men and 40% of women finishing high school.
