STORIES FROM THE FIELD

Early in 2025, MSI Field Leader Cyndi visited several sites in Borneo, Indonesia. She shared some highlights from her journey:

After winding through mountain roads deep in Central Borneo, we reached a small village hidden beyond the jungles.

Walking along a clay footpath, the songs of birds filled the air, leading us to a simple but joyful sight: Ware Jari Kindergarten. A sign pointed us toward the school—“+/- 50 meters away.” From my experience, I’d say it was definitely plus 50!

I entered the classrooms. Inside, the wooden floors gleamed, newly restored thanks to MSI’s support in 2023. The space was modest, yet full of warmth. It was humbling to realize that a child who once walked the halls of this kindergarten is now being equipped as a future Christian educator through the TransformNation (TfN) Program.

The classroom was alive with the laughter of children and the gentle presence of four dedicated teachers, including a woman who was the first in her family—and one of the first in the village—to follow Christ out of an animistic background. She is also a proud mother of two TfN interns. The teachers are highly respected in the village and have helped shape generations of young learners.

I watched the children happily played slide indoor. The playground stands ready outside, but is packed up when school is closed. Why? The field becomes the village’s soccer pitch, and rough play in the past damaged equipment meant for small children. To protect it, the playground equipment is now moved indoors.

After our school visit, we were invited to enjoy a feast of warm food and heaps of fresh rambutan and durian. Many families regularly share the bounty of their gardens with the teachers as a gesture of gratitude. We also saw people from the village who don’t have their own water source bathing in the river or other shared public areas.

We left the village reflecting on this legacy of quiet faith and generational impact. As we passed convoys of mining trucks on the rugged road out of town (some of the only vehicles to travel that path) the contrast was stark. But so was the clarity: in this remote village, the Good News is alive. Education is thriving. And seeds planted in faith decades ago are now bearing fruit. In the classroom, in the community, and in the lives of those called to teach and serve.

Please pray and consider supporting the work in Ampari Bura.
Current needs include the renovation of the ceiling.
