STORIES FROM THE FIELD

Early in 2025, MSI's Field Leader Cyndi visited several sites in Borneo, Indonesia. She shared some highlights from her journey:

On the south coast of Borneo sits Slippery Rock, a place that’s far more than a few buildings. With a church, kindergarten, and children’s home, it has become a thriving, Christ-centered community where healing and transformation happen daily.

At the heart of it are Sani and Elka, a faithful couple raising over 50 children as their own, many of whom have come from painful and broken pasts. In Slippery Rock, every child carries a story worth telling:

Bayu

Bayu had never heard about God before coming to the children’s home. Now, he knows God by name and enjoys writing letters to his sponsors.

Tesa and Jestyn

Tesa, who came from an abusive and traumatic environment, shared how she has grown in peace and joy since arriving over a year ago.

Jestyn
, now in 9th grade, dreams of becoming a teacher. Her gentle leadership is already drawing attention as a future candidate for the TransformNation (TfN) Program.

Deli

Deli, in 10th grade, shines both on the basketball court and in the worship band.

Okto

And Okto, who underwent cleft palate surgery when he was a baby, is joyfully learning to speak.

Inside the kindergarten, walls are decorated with colorful murals and shelves filled with donated educational tools. Children gather in small groups for learning games, literacy activities, and play under the covered patios. Wall murals were painted by Sani and one of the older boys, brings a burst of color and pride between the school and church buildings. This is a place where faith is practiced, not just preached.

The impact of Slippery Rock stretches far beyond its gates. As many as eight teens have either entered or are preparing for the TfN Program to become Christian educators. Beyond the campus, the team has begun blessing nearby tribal villages—like KM 57 (Alut)—through education initiatives.

In Alut, we met a tribal leader wearing a traditional bark vest and a hornbill-feathered headdress, who openly practices animism. He showed us weapons passed down for generations, believed to hold supernatural power when used in rituals. And yet, in a striking display of grace, this same man has welcomed Sani and the teachers into the village to educate their children, opening the door for a new generation to encounter love and truth.

Marlin, the kindergarten principal, now teaches both in Batulicin and in Alut, bringing joyful learning to children who once had no access to school at all.

Back home, the community thrives through hard work and resourcefulness. A fish pond stocked with catfish, vegetable gardens, composting, and creative recycling efforts are all part of a sustainable model. Recently, Mustard Seed acquired additional land for future expansion, and the hope is to build stronger property walls to better protect the children and the grounds.

Evenings end with shared meals, letters from sponsors, and quiet reflection. Children like Jelita, once sent home for behavior struggles, are showing signs of transformation. Mikael, a neighbor often left in Elka’s care, has become like family. And the love of Christ continues to shape young hearts like Kevin, Erva, Rinaldi, Paula, and so many more. Slippery Rock is not just a children’s home. It is a living testimony to restoration, hope, and the transforming love of God.

Please pray and consider supporting the work in Slippery Rock Children’s Home.
Current needs include supporting a child for $30 / month and extending the fence.
