Early in 2025, MSI's Field Leader Cyndi visited several sites in Borneo, Indonesia. She shared some highlights from her journey:
The story of faith across generations runs deep in Bamban Village, a quiet community nestled near Matarah in South Borneo. It takes about 4.5 hours of driving from the airport in Central Borneo to reach this place, but what awaits is more than just a kindergarten. It’s a living legacy of grace, love, and transformation.
At the center of the community is Anugerah Kindergarten. “Anugerah” meaning grace in Indonesian. The kindergarten is flanked by two meaningful structures: a church on the right and the home of the local pastor on the left. Together, they tell a story of spiritual leadership that has shaped this village for decades. The pastor has served the community for over 33 years, after graduating from a local Bible school. Today, the church has 162 members, most of them from the surrounding village, and he continues to serve faithfully while also teaching part-time in nearby schools.
I met one of the kindergarten’s students, Nifa, a bright five-year-old who loves to draw. She proudly showed me her classroom and listed the names of her friends one by one.
This community is not only home to a spiritual legacy, it is built upon it. We visited Maisy, the principal of Anugerah Kindergarten. As a little girl, she grew up watching her father faithfully bring the Good News to animistic villages throughout the region. One of his father’s lasting legacies is a woman who, as a teenager, became the first person in her family and in the area, to follow Christ. Today, that woman serves as a teacher at Ware Jari Kindergarten, and is a proud mother of two TransformNation (TfN) interns.
Maisy herself is part of this generational story. She met her husband at a local youth group Christmas celebration. This celebration is one of many beloved traditions in the region where young believers from surrounding churches gather to sing, eat, and enjoy fellowship.
But behind these scenes of faith and joy, challenges persist. The back of the school sits dangerously close to a ravine, created by repeated mudslides. The land slopes sharply, making it unsafe. During heavy rains, flooding becomes a serious concern. While the church next door remains dry thanks to its raised foundation, the kindergarten is more vulnerable. MSI has received a proposal to rebuild the kindergarten, recommending solutions such as raising the foundation and installing a proper drainage system to divert runoff. The government has already provided mounds of earth to help address the issue, but more work is needed.
In Bamban, grace is more than a name. It’s woven into families, classrooms, and community life. From the early seeds planted by a father bringing the Good News to the joyful noise of little ones learning and growing. This is a place where the faith is alive. And Mustard Seed International is honored to walk alongside those nurturing the next generation.
Please pray and consider supporting the work in Bamban.
Current needs include the raising of the foundation, adding drainage system, and rebuilding the kindergarten.
